    My DIY brass cantle

I had been promising to post photos of my latest project. A vintage style brass hinged cantle. Well, I finally took the photos and here they are.

I'm happy with the way it turned out and the hinge and clasp seem to work good. I made the back and hinges from scratch but was lucky to find a 7" diameter brass tray to use for the body. It cost me a whole 50 cents!

As you can see the studded half brass balls serve a purpose along with adding some detail to the design. I wanted to capture an antique look and I decided not to polish it. Just handling it has already created a patina on the uncoated brass which is fine by me.

I still have to do the skin which will be angora goat which will be sewed to a cowhide leather back. I'm not sure if I'll put tassels on it. I may make another cantle with the other half of the tray and sew a brown leather pouch instead of fur.

I will post photos of the finished sporran.

I'm not usually a fan of cantles, but I like this one. It's unique and not chrome, which are two "plusses". I'd like to see the finished product.
It appears to be very good craftsmanship. Thanks for posting it.

Very nicely done, I look forward to the finished sporran. I've long admired the old style sporrans and your version looks great.

That's exactly what I've been hoping to find in a brown leather sporran. I reall looks great, not too ornate, very tasteful. Some layered brown leather will make a very fine sporran.

Thanks for the feedback. I had fun making it and hopefully the goatskin will turn out as good as the metalwork. I've got some ideas already brewing for the next one.
