My DIY Sgian don'ts - inspired by Panache

Being inspired by Panache's beautiful DIY sgian don'ts, I decided to make my own. So far, I have two - the top one is my first attempt. It's made from an 1/2" oak dowel rod, with a bit of decorative carving. The bottle opener is a paint can opener from the hardware store. I like it, but I think the handle turned out too thin. The second is also made of oak, and I'm much happier with it. The bottle opener is from a wing corkscrew (bought at a garage sale). These are easy and fun to make, and cheap.

HA! That is great! I never seem to have a bottle opener handy when I need one.

    Well done!
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

Thanks. I'll probably add some metalwork or a nice metal emblem to my next one. I didn't leave enough room for anything else on these. Now, to use one...

Nice work, you might try some of the more exotic woods for variety

Those look good. Did you use a lathe to get that nice rounded spot in the dowel rod?

Quite nice - I've been looking for an old opener like your second one to hack up for just such a project - can't seem to come up w/ one though.

Actually, I used a Dremel tool, curved cutter (hourglass shape), and a mini router table. It was a bit tricky, though. A lathe would have helped.

Try garage sales and thrift stores. I bought that one for $1.
