    My first Xkilt

Well, I bought material, printed the instructions. Now I am getting ready to start. My girlfriend is going to help me, she loves when I wear my kilts and said she wants to help me make one. I will post pics as soon as I have something to take pictures of. I am so excited! She is going to have to show me how to use the sewing machine too since I have never used one.

If you have the fabric, that would be something to take a picture of. You'd be surprised how many of us are interested in even that little detail!

As you become familiar with the sewing machine, bear in mind that, just like in Rock, Paper, Scissors the scissors always beats paper, sewing needle always beats finger. It's a rule.

I picked up 4.5 yds of OD green ripstop. I'm afraid it may be too light weight. I'll try to post a picture of it soon.

Ok, here is a picture of the fabric laid out before I cut it. I measured it 3 times then cut it down. Now I just need the girlfriend to come by after work and show me how to use the sewing machine. I tried to do some stitching on some scrap material, I suck at it. The directions I have for my machine are confusing. Now I am just hanging out, waiting to learn to use this thing. I am so excited to have it cut out though.

I can feel your frustration coming through the computer screen!! Stay with it. It's hard to tell from the picture but that does look like a fairly light-weight material. There may be a second kilt in your near-future.

Is it ripstop nylon? You know, like parachute cloth? That will definitely be too light, but this picture doesn't really look like that.

Once you know how to use the machine, though, a whole new world opens up.

No, it is ripstop cotton like the old summer weight BDU's were made out of. I am not giving up, I was having a blast until I couldn't figure out how to use the darn machine. No worries, after Boy Scouts, I'll get back to it.

Well I had the same problem. A bit of web searching found someone who posted a "basics", with pictures and a video, on using the machine with similar make/model. Try searching for the manufacturer's web page as well.

Is it heavy enough that you'd wear a pair of trousers made out of it to do yard work or the like? If so, it's probably heavy enough.

What don't you understand about your machine? And what's the make and model?
