    New Sgian Project

I've started my next sgian, which will be a birthday present for a good mate. As Red is a W.O.2 in the Royal Tank Regiment, I've decided to fit acrylic bolsters in the regimental colours of brown, red & green (mud, blood, & the green fields beyond), and attempt to route a regimental collar dog into the hilt.

In the true spirit of interservice rivalry, I'm making the hilt & sheath from mango wood. Apart from being a beautiful timber, there's an old navy joke referring to soldiers as "mangos", based on "green on the outside, yellow on the inside, & too many of them have an undesirable effect on the body's functioning". (cleaned up a tad for posting) Red'll appreciate the joke.

Timber has been sawn & split, & I'll start the blade this morning. Pics as I progress.

Sounds interesting, I'm looking foreward to seeing some pics. Also, your anecdote about mangos reminded me of another. My step-grandfather was in the RCAF and was what they called a "Canary", because he was 'too cute to shoot and too yellow to fly'.

I decided to experiment a bit with this one: I decided to laminate the hilt, & the sheath is in 4 parts. OK, it's probably not new,but it's new to me, & this whole sgian dubh-building thing is a teach myself as I go tutorial Here's the pics to date.

The blade was done the same way as my last sgian dubh project

Basically done. A bit more sanding & polishing, & it'll be ready for the coat of wax. Apologies for the blurred shot, the camera couldn't decide where to focus.

That looks really sweet. Did you do the carving by hand or some sort of eletric tool? How long did it take?

Very nice, I am sure Red will love it.
