    Next stab at kilt hose

Having made a minor hash of my first-ever knitting project (wearable but flawed kilt hose), I wanted to get right back on the horse STS and try again. I was going to repeat the same pattern but figured, what the heck, let's go for a different cuff pattern. Found a basketweave that I liked, fiddled the stitch count to enlarge the "weave" and fit the stitch count I needed, and plunged in. Here's the first cuff done, in Patons Classic Wool / Moss Heather. It's a richer green than shows on my monitor, with light and dark golden brown highlights.

I like knitting both mates at once, so next step is casting on and knitting the other cuff. Oh yeah, another addiction / another project / another distraction from the work that pays the bills so I can buy more fabric and yarn!

Looks great. I think I have used Paton's for making caps. I will check. Is this "sock yarn?" Where do you get your patterns?

Yes, this is one of Patons' "sock yarns," 4-ply worsted weight. It's quite reasonably priced at marymaxim.com, here's that link.

The overall hose pattern is from Calancraft's "knit-along" group -- here's a link if you're interested. She is about to release a cable pattern; you can purchase the pattern only or also get wool from her.

The basketweave idea came from a pattern shown in the Knitting for Dummies book (OK, I've been outed, I'm a knitting dummy!). They showed a 3 x 5 pattern which I enlarged to 5 x 7, I can post those row counts if you wish.

That looks very nice, and you've picked a handsome shade of green. I like working basket-weave, too. It's not difficult, is "different" looking, and works up quickly. Just make sure you work the top of your sock in ribbing for most of the height of the cuff, minus about half an inch. When someone wears the sock, the cuff will stretch sideways, which will shorten the height of the cuff. That shorter height will show ribbing unless you work a little bit of the pattern under the cuff.

    Gotcha, I think.

I thought the garter section on KAL pattern #1 was a bit too long, so planned to shorten it anyway -- making the garter depth somewhat shorter than cuff depth. That will accommodate some cuff stretching/shortening during wear.
