    painted kilt?

So I'm thinking(HARD) about making a kilt with what I envision as Japanese style water painted around it with rocks and waves in the pleats. Has anyone ever seen something like that? Any thoughts on box vs. knife pleating? I have a target date of late spring for a particular event, although the idea has been percolating for some time. I have expertise available to me on the painting itself, it's the kilt elements I'm really looking for advice on.

Maybe you could get it screen printed on canvas or duck cloth?

I have seen kilts with a saltire or a rampant lion woven into the fabric which then appears on the pleats and on the apron, so your idea should work.

Racer96 posted some photos of his UKs that were screen printed, but the links to those images are now broken.

I bet the talented Paul Henry has probably dabbled in that field.. He is such a talented artisan.. The screen printed kilt he had done several months back was nice.

OMG - I'm so horrible for forgetting that! What I loved about that kilt is that it incorporated his work from a previous, unrelated project. I really admire the way he approaches his work like that.

I think BOX PLEATS for ease of composition / placement. It might be useful to make a mockup, either from paper or muslin, so that you can plot the placement of the images...

I agree, a mockup would be useful. However, a knife pleat while more difficult to line up, would make for a more dramatic effect. IMHO.
