Rob Roy ala Thompson

Here's a Rob Roy sporran (my first) that I just finished from American Bison.

Couple of things I would do different...pull the "flap" about a half inch further down and set the Celtic cross button a bit lower too.

Other than that I'm pretty happy with it.

Nice work ! I agree with your self assessment of things to change, maybe even a full inch lower on the flap ?

The braided cords are a nice touch.

Looks great! Now you know what you would do differently are you going for second one in the future?

Well, I've never seen one of these in person...a couple on the forum...but Thompson's instructions would make it very hard to lower the flap a full inch. In the original schematic, the flap is a perfect circle with a rectangular extension. If the flap were lowered that much on the original pattern, you'd have the rectangular portion functioning as a part of the flap.

On my version, even though the measurements are the same, the circle widens and flows into the rectangular portion. But where the top edge of the circle would be, is located at the top edge of the back panel. (I hope that's somewhat clearer than mud) and roughly where it would almost have to be on Thompson's original pattern. Of course, he doesn't give real detailed instructions but If I swapped out Thompsons flap for mine I would have a hard time moving it down at all.

Eventually...this one will probably go to my son-in-law (and proud new father)...and I'll make myself another out of a softy water buffalo that we sometimes use for making shoes. I worked out a lot of little details, such as how to mount the Celtic cross with enough clearance to get the braid behind it, so the next should go more quickly and easily.

That is nice work. I'm making a casual version of the same pattern of heavy black canvas I happened upon. I "interpretted" the pattern a bit and may have made some of the same changes you did. In canvas, it's a bit softer, although this fabric is quite stiff.

I need to find some sort of button and then add the lacing for it. I also have some dark rust color canvas of the same sort, I'm going to make another for young Scooby to go with his denim XKilt. Pics when they're done.
