Hi, All,
As Barb said, I PM'd her last night, as I want to ensure that I don't trample her rights as an author. At the same time, I'd like to encourage those that have bought her book by seeing how an actual kilt by a (currently) unskilled individual progresses. As most of you can probably figure out from my nickname, I write software for a living. Fortunately, right now I do it for the government and can give away my work product to the country for free (after all, U.S. tax dollars have paid for the development thereof). I have written commercial software before, though, and it can be very frustrating to have something over which you've sweated blood and tears just bandied about for free. In addition, my late grandfather-in-law and my mother-in-law are both authors, and I'd never hear the end of it from either of them (Grandpa B. has a long reach, even out from the grave) if I got too careless here.
If I err here, it will be on the side of not revealing information, and on the side of encouraging those that are following along to buy and read the book. I expect that, once the pictures and snippets are up, it will be very easy for anyone who HAS a copy of the book to see exactly what's going on and how.
So (having hopefully put that topic to bed), I think I will take the FHCAG's suggestion and put something on Photobucket. Time tonight will be a little tight, but I'm going to try to get to it this weekend.
Thanks,
Brian

I may be a little more sensitive to the nuances of what I, at least, consider right and wrong with regard to these kinds of issues.
I also have written three books that are tutorials on rather difficult techniques.
I have had people purchase a book and take off the cover (it's comb bound), photocopy the pages, and then send it back to me asking for a refund. And in one case they didn't even bother to pretend like they had put the covers back on.
Another fellow lifted photos, illustrations, and blocks of text wholesale from my books and made a CD book that he was selling on EBay. Only a threat of a lawsuit put a stop to the most egregious aspects of that.
So in the context of an "online photo/pictorial tutorial" (not originally my terminology) I stand by my characterizations of plagiarism and disrespect.
Having said that, I repeat what I said originally--this is my view.
And, at the same time, I salute KiltedCoder for being sensitive to the work and the rights of others. It's refreshing especially by comparison to some of the attitudes I've run across.

And I apologize if my phrasing sounded like I was hoping for plagiarism.
I guess it did sound a bit like I was hoping to see the book up here step-by-step in pictures.
It's a great book, and I do plan on posting a few pictures when I make a kilt from it, but not as a summary or rephrasing of the book, just as a little photo journalism of progress and any bits that I may get hung up on.
I'm looking forward to your pictures Brian!
Relax hospitaller.
Thanks, meinfs, I think I will...
Be well,

As both author, spouse of an author, and related to various other artistic types, I too am very sensitive about the unauthorized use of copyrighted material. (a BTW, as soon as you produce it, it is covered under the copyright act, whether formally registered and/or published or not.)
Thanks for being sensitive to Barb's work and rights as an author, both morally and legally!

Finally, the pics and info.
Hi, All,
Okay, here are the first pics.
First, to review the bidding: the tartan is a U.S. Army tartan from Scotweb. It was 4 metres of double-wide, as shown below.

The poor tartan: it had no IDEA what was in store for it!!
Obviously, the first thing that had to be done was to turn 4 metres of double-wide into 8 metres of single-wide.

and finally, the inside apron

Last, here's a pic of the test I ran on the chalk:

At this point, everything is marked on the tartan, and (maybe even tonight), I'll get a chance to start actually putting stitches in it!
This is going to be fun!

Pleating
So, the plan of attack at this point is to pleat it to the lighter blue stripe in the middle of the darker blue field (please excuse me if I don't have the terminology quite correct).
Let me know what you all think so far!
Thanks,
Brian

Wow, that's gonna look great! All that beautiful blue across the back, opening up to dark green when you walk.
The double yellow stripe would be fun too, but a bit loud (says the Loud Macleod wearer! ). I think your choice is excellent!
