I'm pretty sure this topic has been covered before and there are several sources for nice blades. Rab Gordon comes to mind as a good source for quality damascus blades http://www.rainnea.com/Sgian-Dubh-Blades.htm . The Salmon River Forge http://users.sisqtel.net/dgatwood has been mentioned. Hope this helps.

I might make you a batch of them in real nice damascus with some filework for a pair of those cool shoes you make. PM if that piques your interest at all. Of course you might not want that many of them, I dunno ?

    Brad,

Thanks, that's a good lead. And a good price point to start with. I appreciate it.

On a side note, as i found out in my copy of the anvil's ring that I got today, Howard Clark is demonstrating at the Guild of Metalsmiths Fall Conference in Hastings Minnesota , sept 19-21 So if you're in that area look up that ABANA chapter and you can see the artist at work making knives =P

I've used Caulfield before too. Good quality product and the price is very reasonable.

Well, to be frank the first sgian I made (for myself) used a AC blade. It wasn't the damascus blade they offer so I really can't speak to that but it wasn't a very good blade either. In my line of work the most important skill a person can have is the ability to sharpen a knife...and I can sharpen a blade of good steel so that it's "scary sharp." But while I could get an edge on the AC blade, it just wouldn't hold.

In any event, that kind of soured me on them although I like the long tang and the narrow width.
