Here's the sporran belt I made from a small womans belt found at Walmart for $7 and a few extra parts. I like it cause it's reversable.
Black inlay side
All metal side.
Otherwise I just use a nylon strap with a ladder lock buckle on one end. It's a backpacker's tie down strap.
My favorite is still just a plain leather strap, either black or brown to match the sporran. That's about all I wear, formal or casual. Why mess with simplicity?

Once I get into some money (and other formal attire) I want to get a big fancy chain like James' or OFCJAX, and mount it to some black felt to stop it from wearing on the kilt.

Putting a black velvet backing on a formal evening sporran chain has a lot of attraction for me too. Sounds like a cool idea!
