    Stepping outside the square!

This one will hopefully appeal to those of Viking/Germanic genetics. I started work on a different (for me at least!) kind of project today. I figured I should do something for one of my timber suppliers, as he is always giving me discounts, freebies, etc. Seeing his background is pure Scandinavian, I decided to have a go at making him a seax. I've also found that it's possible to use a pot-bellied stove for forging/tempering, given a large amount of time & patience, along with a LARGE amount of heatbeads to keep the coals up. A vaccuum cleaner on reverse works well as a bellows. More pics to come as the project progresses.

The hilt blank laminated. I used beefwood & antler. At this stage I plan to route out the joins & inlay them with pewter.

    In the stove to cook!

The seax blade is at the front to cool off a bit. The bars at the back will be sgians.

The seax blade. Apologies for the blurry shot, but it got awkward taking the pic while I held it.

Looks like you are having fun you just finish one project and right onto someything else, I am sure your Timber supplyer will love it.

    Fantastic.
I look forward to watching this progress.

Your Ivy on on the way, by the way.

here's a couple of progress pics:

The hilt well on the way to finished. I decided not to go with the pewter, as I'm worried it'll be overkill.

    The blade taking shape.

A rough layout of the overall look.
