x-kilt direction questions HELP

I have a question.

In the beginning of the construction stages, where one is sewing on the Velcro to the Over-Apron Strip, it states to put the velcro 1.25 inches down from the top edge. If the strip is 3 inches, and the velcro is 2 inches, that puts the velcro off the bottom edge of the strip!

HELP!

I think you found a typo. The velcro goes near the top. Just under where the belt will ride. O'Neille

That 1.25 inches is just an allowance for the waistband. you don't want to bury the velcro under the waistband!

Couple of solutions...1.) make a narrower waistband! Ergo, move the velcro up a quarter of an inch....2.) make a slightly wider under-apron strip. It doesn't have to be exactly 3 inches wide, four-five-six inches are fine. I wouldn't make it TWENTY inches wide, eh?

Try it there, and if it looks right it probably is.

Allow enough room for the waistband--it's 1 inch in the instructions, that's why 1.25 inch was specified. As he notes above, you could adjust the waistband or the strip to fit.

I left out the strip and attached two velcro pieces to the hem (right) and underpleat (left). An alternative I considered was using a waistband wide enough to hold the Velcro.

No it can't be 0.25, that is too high up.

The strip is 3 inches, the Velcro is 2 inches.

Thinks - have I ever come across 2inch wide Velcro? No. Never have. The normal stuff is maybe 1 inch.

The advice is to sew the waist band 3/4 to 1 inch from the edge, the Velcro has to be below that level.

Maybe the Velcro is only one inch wide and it will happily sit on the strip just as shown in the drawing?

That makes 1.25 inches at the top, 1 inch of Velcro and 0.75 inches underneath - total of 3 inches.

Now - will go and Google for 2 inch wide Velcro.

Or you could totally hang the velcro and use some variation on straps buckles, etc. to close your X-Kilt.

Right-o! I've made 6 X-kilts and no two are identical. Many paths lead to great truths, grasshopper.

that I found somewhere. Industrial strength, too. I cut it down to 2".
I ended up moving the front apron to seam by the waistband down by 1/2 inch at the opening, so had to shift the whole thing anyhow. I sewed bits of velcro on in several places, right at the waistband. I aslso had some VERY small buckles that I used temporarly until I get some larger ones. It works.

Still need to do sme final adjustments. He is wearing it, and is pleased. He is use to traditional kilts and wider front aprons. The 10 inches I used is a bit hard for him to get use to, but he is adjusting. I believe it needs snaps or buttons down the sides of the front apron. It looks like it is just missing something.

Overall, it took me about 12 hrs.

I can see that you have already solved the problem, but I couldn't help taking a dig at poor Alan!
