We threw some 12 pound hammer yesterday. I really forget....I should do it some more, it will build speed.

Kenny Lowther and Ryan both have used an 8 lb hammer for training purposes. This is good stuff.

Wher are you staying Kit? We will be at the Garden Inn in Gilroy!

Followed your lead and booked myself in at the Hilton in Gilroy, too.

Got your page this morning about moving practice back to Thursday. Gonna have to be a light day so we're recovered by Sunday.

Wow. It was pretty hot today. 91 Degrees when I went out to the garage to exercise this evening. Turned on the big fan and kicked it into high gear.

Went light because of the games this Sunday. Gonna go light in the throwing practice tomorrow up in Newcastle with Roger, too. It's will be all about the technique. And trying to stay cool in the shade.

I need to measure the crossbar arm on the streetlight outside my house. It's my sheaf standard.

Lots of shade waiting for you here!

Indeed there was shade and it was quite comfortable in spite of the 95 degrees.

Roger has a sweet throwing area which shall be henceforth known as Rattlesnake Glen. The star attraction of this spot are the 30' tall sheaf/WOB standards.

Today we had the throwing of the implements.

    June 14, 2012

    Open Stone
    3 throws - no measurements
    Braemar Stone
3 throws with the "bent" Braemar - no measurements
    LWFD
    2 throws - no measurements
    WOB
3 throws topping out at 12'
    Sheaf
    3 throws topping at 21'

This was all light weight work with technique being the main focus as the games are only a few days a way. I was pleased to be able to clear the 12' in the WOB with room to spare as my last WOB was the Dixon Games in 2011. That Core Blaster has paid dividends. Clearing 21' in sheaf with ease was also a bonus as I last contested this event at the Worlds in 2010 and only made 22' on my second attempt. Only two athletes in my age bracket have gone higher this year and both are easily within range (22' and 24').

I'm relatively confident I will not embarrass myself this Sunday.

    You sure didn't!

Roger has 30 foot sheaf standards? OK, THAT is why he's throwing so ridiculously high!

My version of the Loch Lomond/Santa Cruz Games follows.

    The scores first...
    • Braemar Stone 25'9" for first place
    • Open Stone 30'9" for second place
    • LWFD 39'11" for second place
    • HWFD 26'2.5" for second place
    • Light Hammer 75'8" for second place
    • Heavy Hammer 60'2.5" for second place
    • Sheaf Toss 22' for second place
    • WOB 13' for first place tie
    • Caber 11:55 for first place

Overall, I was pleased with my throws seeing as how this was only the second games I have competed in since the 2010 season's end. Been averaging only one games a year since then. Looks like the exercise regimen I've been logging here has been specific enough to keep the strength up in the right areas.

    Next a few gratuitous photos.

    22' in the Sheaf - A make

    Couldn't make 24', tho.

That close to making 13'6" in the Weight Over The Bar.

Lots of fun and looking forward to the Monterey Games next month. I really want to get that 24' in the Sheaf!
