| | | Allegiance and chief-less clans
I've read several times -- a couple of times on XMTS -- that a person can write to a clan chief to offer his or her allegiance, typically in hopes that the chief would reply and accept their loyalty.
Right now, however, a number of clans are without chiefs. What would a person do in that case?

I know some people are uncomfortable about this idea, but remember the whole purpose of the clansman's badge is to denote a clansman (or woman) that is part of the chief's family. The badge belongs to the chief, not the surname.
Some will indeed write up a bond of manrent to their Chief -- is it necessary? Not especially, unless you're serving in the Atholl Highlanders, I suppose. But, it's a quaint custom that some enjoy.
For the chiefless clans, the Lyon Court may appoint a Commander to act in the Chief's stead until a new Chief can be named.
Our own Sketraw has a very interesting article on his web site which is germane to this discussion: http://www.clan-duncan.co.uk/clan-re...derbhfine.html
Regards,
Todd

Heck, I was going to say round up a bunch of henchmen and declare yourself the new chief.

But before you go around with eagle feathers in your bonnet, you better have some paperwork from someone official, or a permit from the Fish and Wildlife Service, or you may find yourself Chief of Cell Block 27!

One is a gent in Scotland who is about 186 years old. The other is a guy in Indiana who could not possibly care less about all this stuff.
Needless to say, my resume is updated, and I'm tanned, rested and ready. I'm just waiting for a phone call.

I can assure every one that I am not 186 years old, contrary to local popular belief, so it's not me they are looking for.

Years before he was named chief of Clan Currie, Robert Currie was just a guy from New Jersey who started looking into his heritage. Within a few years of beginning that research, he became chief. At least that is how I remember an article from the Newark Star-Ledger from the mid-90s.
