building a Tartan and registering it.

I know that this has come up before, but could not find the thread. I'm a member of a National Motorcycle organization. I contacted a few brothers, who I know are often kilted, in the Fort Worth area to see what they thought of a registered Tartan for our orgaization. They in turn contacted others. Seams like this is generating a lot of excitement. I have passed on this web site address and some may show up in the near future. So, now I need to pull this off.

Can anyone give directions to a Tartan building Template? Preferably something free online. I used one to build a proposal to send out, but it was tied to a particular company. I asked that they quote me, and never heard a word from them. Guess it would be best to use a design template free of any commercial identity, then shop it on my own.

My second question is, once I have designed something, how do I go about getting it registered?

Any direction and guidance you can give me will be greatly appreciated. All of a sudden, there seams to be a lot of brothers counting on me.

I'll take it one step further... if you have an idea what colors or type of design you want to use, we have a few people up here who have designed tartans and recorded them. Matt Newsome has designed and recorded tartans. Kelly and I have done it. Many members here have done it as well.

The problem is that in addition to the STA fees, you have to pay of your own dime to have a commercial run of your tartan for the sample they require, so we're talking about several hundreds of dollars if not more.

Or you can have a commercial print...made, which also adds up.

And as they say on their website, no guarantees they will record it if they find something wrong, a repeat, you are not authorized to register a specific name, patronimic denominator, etc.

If your not familiar with tartan design it may be worth spending the cash to get an expert's help. It depends on how much resources you're willing to devote to the effort. In my case I didn't want to run the risk of having my design rejected by the STA as being too close to another existing tartan. So I used the services of Matt Newsome. It also depends on how creative you are. Good luck on your design.

You can also commission the STA to design the tartan for you. Also, STA members get use of their consult service (so you can confirm with them that a tartan you designed is going to be registerable before you go off and have a bolt woven).

And getting cloth custom woven doesn't have to be bank-breaking. We can get a small run of 4 yards done:

And it doesn't necessarily have to be commercially produced. If you know a hand weaver, you can have a small sample woven up for registration. They only need a sample large enough to show a full sett repeat to record it.
