custom tartans

If I have "designed" a tartan using an online generator, how much does it usually cost to have the fabric registered and woven?

A VERY round number that I discovered was $1800. I tried an on-line designer and was given info about registering, weaving and minimal amount of cloth to be ordered. As above, Matt will give you the best advice.

You can find the cost of registering your tartan at www.tartansauthority.com. The cost of weaving will depend upon where you have it woven and in what quantity.

I can only speak for us at The Scottish Tartans Museum, but we offer custom tartan in wool with only a 4 yard minimum. Cost at that level is $65/yd (it is 29" wide), but if you are needing greater amounts the price can vary.

I used the new tartan creator on Scotweb to make a tartan fashioned from the ribbon of the Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal. Please take a look and tell me what you think. M.A.C., can you check the thread count? I'm not sure if it's correct. I want the tan thread large like the new Albannach tartan from Rocky. I checked out the tartan authority website for getting it registered. It will take quite a bit of money, but if people like it I might try for it. What do you think? The tartan is named Iraqi Freedom Veteran. Thanks.

Ok, here we go. The first one is my first try. The black stripe down the middle is for those friends who paid the full measure. Then I got to thinking about the American Heritage tartan on USA Kilts, so I made the second one with the large black stripe or black background, however you look at it. The stripe for the same reason. I think I like it better. The last picture is the actual medal so you can see how the tartan matches up.

I like them both. Cool idea but I think if a person were to wear the medal with the kilt, the 1st one would look better IMO.

I think the first one captures the spirit of the medal - good work. The second is a bit heavy on the black for my liking and the medal seems to be lost.

That is because the only place where the sand color appears like the original is in the small square where they intersect, but everywhere else the black interferes. In the first one, sand is the dominant color throughout and you preserve the look of the ribbon by not breaking it up so much.

You also evened out the width of the ribbon stripes in the second one, and I don't think that's nearly as appealing to the eye.
