I think you are talking about the Irvine clan crest.


A buckler is a type of shield.


Although Scots did use bucklers... and Scottish crests are typically displayed with belts & buckles... I can see where someone could get confused. :-)

I suppose I'm really picking at nits, but I don't think it's actually a "clan crest," or that there is even any such thing -- isn't that a "clan badge" for use by members of the clan who don't actually have their own coats of arms? If I'm correctly remembering what little I ever knew about heraldry, the crest is the bit that sits above the helmet in a full achievement of arms. In Scotland every part of a coat of arms is the private property of a single individual, but members of a clan can wear a badge that consists of the chief's crest along with his motto in the belt-and-buckle, so legally at least it's not a "clan crest" but a "clan badge."

Since I keep putting my foot in my mouth I think (and I think as infrequently as possible), I'll call it the little round thingy that I wear on my hat that helps identify clan/organization affiliation.

Correct. The device in the center of the badge is the crest of the chief from their coat of arms. The buckle & strap signify that the wearer is a clansman/woman.

I generally refer to such a badge as a "clansman's badge". See the Information Leaflet below from the Lyon Court for more detailed informaiton.

Well I want to thank the rabble, I've been trying to figure out what that was on his shirt for several months now. I have even e-mailed both food network and Chef Irvine both with no reply. Should have asked here first. Next time I will know.
