Favorite tartan besides your family's
I ran into a piper in MacLennan tartan in the modern colours today. Just for aesthetics, it is the second nicest non-Stewart tartan I have come across. Irish County Cavan, which I have only seen on-line, still rates #1 for me.
How about you?

Well, now that I finally have a tank in Kincaid tartan, I'm lusting for one of Matt's box-pleated kilts- in Carolina tartan, of course!

I felt the same way and still do now that I own a County Cavan kilt. The dyes that the House of Edgar uses in its Irish County tartans are second-to-none (IMHO) and I'm sure that there are others here that would agree.
Edgar's County Cavan tartan was the primary influence of the Fitzsimmons tartan design (click the link in my signature to see pics), since my own Irish ancestry (father & mother) comes from that area of Ireland.
As for other favorites, I'm a fan of the Buchanan, Mitchell Modern, Hunting Stewart, Macrae Ancient Hunting, Cowan of Inveresk, MacLeod Hunting, Ogilvie Modern Hunting, Jenkins (Welsh) and the Buccleuch tartans (the one that USA Kilts sells). One of these days I'm gonna get me that Mitchell Modern...

I have to say that I really like the Maclean Hunting Ancient, which are a perfect match for my High School colors as well as having a special meaning to me

I would have to say the Ireland's National that Scottishkilts.net sells. I look at it every day, and have almost ordered it several times. However, I'm going to have to wait until the plastic cools off a bit. When I do get it, I'm going with a 16 oz 5 yard. IMHO it is a much better looking tartan than the House of Edgar Irish National.

So many beautiful tartans...it's almost impossible to name just one.
The Cameron of Erracht is very nice...modern, ancient, muted...all are lovely!
The Highland Granite from Lochcarron is also beautiful.
And I'm very fond of all the MacLaren tartans

Obviously any one that I have not yet bought!
Seriously, I like the Irish county tartans from HOE. I am also a big fan of weathered tartans.

My two favorites are... County Cavan for its deep rich colors and Isle of Skye for its misty seaside tones.
