Genealogy question: Macduff and Wemyss

The male earls of Clan Macduff failed in 1353, and the direct line of the House of Clan Duff was continued in the family of Wemyss.

So if one has ancestry that can be traced back to Macduff, does that mean that they also are affiliated with Wemyss?

I'll go with no, but it depends on how you view it. It could be possible to trace back to a MacDuff a few generations earlier, before the Wemyss line came into play. If you count cousins (like say 5th cousin 4 times removed) then it would, but otherwise no.

(I just got my family tree linked back to the main Gordon line, down the line of the brother of the one that died in a battle in a foreign country (Hungary I think) but they did have the same dad, about 900 years ago.
