Interesting that there is no mention of Iceland, which is where my father's family came from (by way of Denmark 500 years earlier). You can still find the Wium surname in the Reykjavík phone book, though there are more in Akureyri. Because the name has Danish roots no "son" or dottir" is added. There are also some Wium's in South Africa.
My Mom's family is Irish--very Irish.
I like to say I'm my own master and slave
This site doesn't count Iceland in. I typed my surname, but it only showed the other Nordic pupulation who bear it but not Iceland. The -son and -dóttir names are not family names, because your fathers name comes before the -son or -dóttir. If you are a woman and your father's name is Kristján, for example, your last name would be Kristjánsdóttir( daughter of Kristján) ,however, if you ware a man your last name would be Kristjánsson (son of Kristján). But on the other hand, -sen can sometimes be a familyname because -sen is the ending of some nordic family names and some people have those , for example the soccer player Eidur Gudjohnsen wich plays with FC Barcelona. His father's name isn't Gudjohn so thats a family name. Most people here only have the -son or dóttir name and not family names.
I know I'm going into another subject but I just wanted to tell you how the surnames work here in Iceland

A really fun site. Thanks. Oh, guess what! McMahon is Celtic/Irish, duh. Some interesting (and unexpected) info on my wife's maiden name, Leicy. We always assumed it was German but it comes up Muslin/Iranian!!

Interesting, I knew that Dove is an English name, so I'm not surprised to find Dove's in all the former empire, but oddly enough, it seems a lot of Doves are found in Slovenia.
Slovenia? Dove must be derived from something else in their language.
It's interesting to notice that in the US most of the Doves seem to be in Virginia and Maryland. Now, I'm from Illinois originally, but from what I have been able to find, my Dove line came from Maryland originally (Annapolis to be exact) through Virginia, then west to Illinois.

I get nothing but a "runtime error" over the past few days when I try to enter a name. Anybody else getting this? Any clues? I updated Java. . . no change.
Proudly Duncan [maternal], MacDonald and MacDaniel [paternal].

You probably know this already, but Dove is given as a 'sept' name within the clan Buchanan.

It warns that you must have Flash 9 installed, perhaps that is why you are not seeing it.
