    Help with a tartan ID

    Hello gents

My son has a pair of PJs in this tartan. It's really attractive, and I'd like to know if it's a registered tartan and available for a kilt. Looks like it's based on Black Watch. Sorry it's s tad out of focus.

    thanks a bunch

Hmm.. I don't recognise that one at all. Hopefully Matt will know what it is.

    turpin,

You know you are a kilt addict when you tuck your son into bed and before you can say "good night" you start muttering about the plaid on his pajamas would make a really handsome kilt...

    Seek professional help!

    Cheers

Hate to dissapoint, Turpin, but that's a fashion design.

One sure way you can usually tell is to check and see if the warp is the same as the weft (horizonatl and vertical the same). In traditional Scottish tartans, they will be. In a lot of fashion fabrics used in the clothing industry, the patterns will be different, as they are here.

Thanks Matt - I feel pretty proud of myself for noticing the same thing.

Another way to say it is that tartan will look the same when turned ninety degrees. That's without all the right words, but it's the way I think about it.
