Hodden grey

I've always admire the hodden grey tartan worn by the London Scottish Reg't, as well as the Toronto Scottish Reg't ... recently, I placed a bid on a tam o' shanter flash in hodden grey just to add to my tartan swatch collection. It arrived a few days ago and is just as striking up close as it is in pictures. It's mixture of white and dark brown wools, possibly undyed? I know the original hodden was undyed homespun, but not sure about the MOD version.

Does anyone know if any modern tartan mills could obtain the yarns needed to produce this tartan? I've seen many postings on various boards about people enquiring about hodden grey. I wonder is there is sufficient demand for it to be woven for the civillian market?

Bob Martin, the author of "All About Your Kilt", owns a kilt in Hodden Grey; I've seen a picture of him and Matt (I believe on Matt's blog) when he was wearing it. And I bet Matt could pull some strings and make some calls and get the material woven...Oh, Matt...

I just received my Toronto Scottish pattern glengarry, btw, with the blue and hodden dicing...very nice!

I have a swatch of HG myself for my London Scottish badge; I need to get another one for my Tor Scots one.

From my talks with Bob, the actual Hodden Grey cloth used by the London Scottish is fairly tricky to get. For Bob's kilts, he gets the cloth direct from the source that supplies it to the regiment (can't tell you exactly who that is off the top of my head). Bob has pretty good connections with the LS. I don't know if they'd sell the cloth to just anyone.

And obviously you can't just call up your favorite tartan woolen mill and order it.

You might be able to find cloth in a similar color, mind you, but the actual military cloth is a bit harder to get. I've never tried to order any myself.

I would try the regimental association, I know for serving officers a loan store of highland rig is kept and hired out at Nominal fee.

If something is needed specifically they will get it made (as in the case of a Female serving officer) so they will have contacts for this

Matthew could have mentioned the exhibit on the London Scottish they have at the Museum. Complete with a uniform, the Hodden Grey is beautiful.

My question was about producing a civillian version, probably in 16oz. Surely one of the tartan mills out there could produce this in the right colours in 16oz? I know the LS have a small store of it, but that they are reluctant to even cut a kilt lenght off for one of their own soldiers or pipe band volunteers. I know an ex-LS piper who has tried in vain for several years to get some of the fabric.
