    Kildare Tartan?

    G'day Gang,

Just wondering if anyone might know which is considered more of a "correct" Kildare tartan. I understand that most Irish tartans were design in the 90's by Polly Wittering, but I've come across this beautiful orange tartan on several sites. Where as on scotweb's tartan finder and Matt Newsome's site the blue Kildare tartan seems to be the only one.

Has anyone seen the orange Kildare before?

I have no affiliation with county Kildare... I just liked the orange tartan. It looks similar to the Londonderry Tartan or Buchanan Antique.

Before you judge someone be sure to walk a mile in their kilt.
That way you are at least a mile away and you have their kilt...

Apart from the Irish county tartans designed by Polly Wittering of the House of Edgar, there is also a "County Crest Range" of Irish county tartans designed by Viking Technology Ltd., based on the colors of the counties' coats of arms. I prefer the House of Edgar tartans in almost every case, but you can find the "County Crest Range" tartans on the Scottish Tartans World Register. I believe these are much more recent designs than Polly Wittering's tartans, so you might regard them as less "correct" in that sense, but as far as I know none of the Irish county tartans are actually official—that is, have been adopted by a county's government.

The one you call "Blue Kildare" was probably designed and recorded 1st. It's recorded # is: 2262. The predominant color is really pale green by the way. It's thread count: DY6 PG10 LB44 PG24 R8 PG26 DT4 PG16
This tartan was designed in 1996

The one you call "Orange Kildare" recorded # is 3087 and is titled "Kildare County, Crest Range"

Probably the biggest reason as to why Kildare # 2262 is on the District Tartans website and in Newsome's & Bullman's book is because it's probably the one that is commercially woven and more widely seen.

I've not seen the Orange Kildare before - its one great looking tartan! If its a special order tartan remember D.C. Dalgiesh - they do short runs of tartan at a reasonable charge. If its orange tartans you are looking for - take a look at the Dutch Friendship tartan.

    Cheers!

Wow! You guys are an amazing wealth of information!

Thanks so much for your insights. I'm looking to get an orange flavoured kilt - purely for the colour and am just having a look around.

Ah, the Kildare is indeed a pale green. So many tartans look different depending on which site they hail from. I wonder how many great tartans we're missing simply because the swatches appear wrong on screen?

I really like that Dutch Friendship tartan. Great to see photos of it made up as a kilt. Sometimes it's hard to imagine how a particular tartan will look once sewn up as a kilt as it's hard to guess the size of the sett.

Thanks for the link to the Scottish Tartans World Register too Morris. Much appreciated. I have it bookmarked now along with scotweb's Tartan Finder.
