Maclaine of Lochbuie hunting

I have found two nearly identical tartans in the Lochbuie blue. The only trouble is that one source (The Tartan Weaver by James D. Scarlett) calls it a hunting tartan. I have three pieces of tartan wear purchased as MacLaine of Lochbuie hunting; one from Locharan (sp?) one from Ingles Buchan. I'm not certain about the origin of the third, except it is from a mill in Scotland.
The thread count as given by Scarlett is B64 R6 B8 K2 Y6 The fabrics I have are essentially identical to the above except there is no wee black stripe on either side of the pivot yellow. Can any one give me help on this?

Your first stop in searches about Tartan should always be The Scottish Tartans Authority.

There you will find two Tartans listed with the name MacLaine of Lochbuie

The first is ITI # 1462
The second is listed as the Hunting and is ITI # 491

Your second stop should probably be either House of Tartan or the Scottish Tartans World Register.

Both of the above sources contain both variants. The variant without black stripes is called "MacLaine of Lochbuie" and has the registry number 487. The variant with black stripes is called "MacLaine of Lochbuie Hunting" and has the registry number 491. The former does not appear to be found on the Scottish Tartans Authority's website, probably because the other tartan of the same name (#1462) is the official "MacLaine of Lochbuie" (non-hunting) tartan, and the STA is conservative about including tartans in their registry that have no official standing or are mere variants of officially authorized tartans. ("Official", in this case, would mean having the authorization of Lorne Maclaine of Lochbuie.)

Thanks to the both of you. That pretty well clears it up, for me, at least. I can only assume that the mills reproduced the "old sett" blue, and are selling it as the "hunting" and that the hunting is a derivation of the osb

Thanks a lot guys, it really helped straighten things out in my mind. I would seem that mills are a bit sloppy, calling them both "hunting". caveat emptor, is still good advice, apparently.
