i saw this today and thought perhaps a few xmarkers would like to know about the update regarding data on the Scotland's people government website
they have added records from 1703 to 1908 and cover all catholic congregations

so anyone like myself who is working on a family tree just might like to check this data out perhaps even new data concerning ancestors might come to light

its a government run website you didn't think it would be free did you the people who set the site up scanned and cataloged every record in Scotland from deaths marriages and births imagine how long its taken these folk they also had to translate older style writing £6(30 credits) for the chance of finding 3 generations of ancestors and copies of there certificates is pretty good value for money in my view

Thanks for the link, however if it's a Government website then the people are employees of the state, therefore they get paid by the state via our taxes? Therefore why not get it free?

perhaps email them as i dont have the answer to that one, if you can find me a genealogical site thats free and covers all those records please pm me the details or share with us as id like to see those kinda sites

A free genealogical website? Aye, wishful thinking on my behalf - I'm still waiting for a freebie DNA swab test so that some ex-research grad. can determine I'm descended from a Mesolithic hunter, or Pict, or Polar Bear, or pineapple or whatever...

Also, why should they give it away free to a flood of American researchers who would mooch off their expensive and valuable work! I'm happy to pay it, myself. Hell, I'd still be happy if they only charged the Canucks, Yanks & Aussies!

I doubt that very much of your taxes go to pay for it; as a former civil servant (US National Park Ranger) who worked at a historical/genealogical site, that we're pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to funding -- that seems to be pretty much universal.

Whenever a visitor would make a comment such as this one, I would sometimes say:

Yes, your taxes do pay my salary, but so do mine. So at least you're making a profit of sorts -- I'm working for a vicious cycle.

And btw, there are a number of free genealogical web sites (at least here in the states). As a former genealogical librarian, I can attest to that. Also, try your public library and see if they have a genealogical department that subscribes to pay ones.

I'll stop being lazy and visit the Public Records Office in Edinburgh meself, then it'll be just the cost of a bus fare.
