    Porteous Clan Tartan

    Hi there Smurphs1 Here,
I've been tasked with finding 6-7 Porteous Tartan Kilts, I've been in contact with almost everyone i know that makes kilts and sorry to say I had even contacted India and it seems that because they were from Peebles and closer to the Border, their Tartan is very rare, (I don't understand that) I even researched the auld alliance books that I have on Tartans Sure it's there But no one makes kilts in that Tartan.
Can anyone help me by sniffing out leads?

It is a handsome tartan. You might see about a custom run. Member Matt Newsome offers this service through the Scottish Tartans Museum in as little as one kilt length, and I believe I recall a post or two suggesting that member and kilt maker Barb Tewksbury does as well.

from coastal North Carolina. Also, if you get Matt to make them, he does 4yd box pleat kilts, that reduce the amount of tartan needed by about 1/2. Now any thrifty Scot would appreciate that.

    Hi smurphs1,

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Porteous" tartan is shown below:

    STA ref: 1264
    STWR ref: 1264
    Designer: Davidson, Capt T.S.
    Tartan date: 01/01/1978
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
    Category: Clan

Restrictions: There are no restrictions recorded on the usage of this tartan

Registration notes: Designed for the Porteous Family Association by Capt Stuart Davidson (founder of the Tartans Society) and submitted by Captain Barry Porteous who was president of the Porteus Family Association at that time. Address was 19 Willow Ave, Montreal H3Y 1Y3. Scottish Tartans Society records show a slightly different count of K/2 Y2 B16 G20 AZ14 W/2. The woven sample in the Scottish Tartans Authority's Dalgety Collection differs slightly from both.

    Threadcount: K6Y6B40G50LSB36CW6LSB36G50B40Y6
    Pallet: AA=789484ANC AZURE;K=101010BLACK;CW=FCFCFCCLEAR;DB=202060DARK BLUE;DG=003820DARK GREEN;YT=D8B000TAN YELLOW;G=006818GREEN;B=2C2C80BLUE;Y=E8C000YELLOW;L SB=98C8E8LIGHT SKY.

Using the threadcount and the pallet, you would be able to approach a mill to have the fabric woven - or find a good kiltmaker here and have them approach the mill. The second might be a better option.

    Oh, and welcome to XMarks.

    Regards

    Chas

Welcome from Michigan,USA! Try Celtic Croft, they list Porteous available in their medium weight premium wool formal kilt. Also, Scotweb lists them as well, in their 8 yd. Bespoke and Balmoral lines.

Thread moved to Tartan and Heraldry section.
