The Scottish Register of Tartans 'Now Open'

I see the new website is now up and running at http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk

Some entries have yet to have certain details added or amended but the site is now available to search and register.

    You beat me to it!

I notice you have to register for an account to access certain information such as thread counts, but registration is free and easy. And they email the thread count right to your inbox upon request.

Their fees for registering new tartans are not extravagant, either, which I was happy to see.

    I've already registered!

Thanks for posting this, John -- does the HSS have any information about the register's arms? I'd like to know more about the ram's heid -- or is that the arms of the National Archives of Scotland?

    Regards,

    Todd

Looks really nice. It seems to me that their catalog is more complete than the other tartan search engines, and the notes seem much more detailed.

    Some things I noted:

-- The description for the Carolina tartan does not clearly specify that it is the only pattern officially adopted by the legislatures of North and South Carolina.

-- They misspelled our web address in the description of the X Marks tartan.

-- They very clearly state that the Keeper has no authority to enforce restrictions that a designer, clan, corporation, etc. may elect to place on the use of a tartan. (not to be confused with legally registered intellectual property rights, such as those existing for the IOS tartan). Those worried that the Register was a covert attempt to create an official tartan police force can now breathe a sigh of relief!

Well, they have the tartan to which I belong listed, and a pretty good explaination of it. That's neat
