Tartan or not?

I recently came across about 90' or wool cloth in my parents attic.


It looks almost like Wallace Hunting Modern... but not quite.

Is it a McIKEA or a proper tartan?

I was gonna say Gunn, but I think Murray is it. You could clothe your entire clan at your next gathering! Wish I had so much of Gunn fabric. Cheers!

My best guess is that this is not an actual named tartan, though those who said Murray were very close.

The Murray tartan normally seen today is the Murray of Atholl (aka Atholl district). This is based on the Black Watch, with a red line on every green portion, and a red line on every other blue, with the alternate blues having the two double tram lines in black.

However, this is not what you see here. What you see here is very close to another Murray tartan, the one recorded in the Vestiarium Scoticum and not too common these days. That one has the red stripe on the green only, and the black lines on the blue follow the normal Black Watch pattern (every other one having a single pair of black lines in the center, alternating with blues with a double pair of black lines to the side).

Given what we see here pictured, it looks like this tartan has only a single pair of black lines in each blue field, so I don't think it can be called a Murray, though it is very close to it.

Check the link I posted above. It's a Murray variant - #12 from the Cockburn Collection in Glasgow. It doesn't have the Black Watch pattern of black lines, but looks just like the sett posted by Curnir, with only the double black lines centered in the blue field....
