Tartan Possibilities

Let me know anything that you know. A very good friend of mine was laid to rest on the day beofre Thanksgiving this year. I attended his visitation and funeral in first a Black Watch mod. and then a Holyrood mod. His older brother, also a dear friend of mine, really wants to get a kilt now. The brother who was laid to rest always wore kilts in the Scottish National or the Black Watch. The older brother now wants a kilt of his own but wants one in their family tartan.
Problem is this, their last name is MacCarty, and I have no knowledge of any tartan or clan affiliations for this name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is that an alternate spelling of McCarthy? If so, ITI tartan #4049 looks applicable.

MacCarty is just too close to McCarthy to be wrong. According to here it is an alternate spelling.

So I would say that your problem is solved!

First, condolencese on you loss.

Both you and your first friend wore kilts in Tartans that are considered "universal", capable of being worn by anyone.

Why cannot your second friend wear a similar "Universal" type of Tartan? There are far more regional, fashion, and corporate Tartans to choose from than there are Clan Tartans.

The only written rule (and it's only written because it has been said here many times) is;

Pick a Tartan you like, know what Tartan you are wearing, and wear it with pride.

I offer my condolences for the loss of your friend.
It looks like his brother could wear something for McCarthy as a family tartan. He may also want to consider the Scottish National or Black Watch to honor the memory of his brother who wore those tartans.
