Tartans for a Cause?

I'm on the road down on the Hopi rez so don't have my normal on line access. Was reading the thread about the new Capercaillie tartan and how Alan pointed out the Antarctica tartan was also for a cause.

I know there are three versions of a "Recovery" tartan for folks who got clean and sober. I suspect there are many other tartans created to represent a "cause" rather than a clan or corporation or branch of the military.

How many can we come up with?

Wearing the tartan of a "cause" you believe in is certainly noble...and a great conversation starter.

Hopefully the list can stay non-political and just address the tartan, rather than the details and the nobility of the cause.

Cancer, (either generic or specific, Breast, Lung etc.), Muscular Dystrophy, AIDS, World Hunger, Democracy, Animal Welfare, Global Warming, Heart health, Environment, Worker's movement, Alternative fuel, Diabetis, World peace, Child protection, Native people's rights,


(Half Flippantly) Maybe "FreeTibet" (wow! think of all that saffron & red!)

Stillwater or Frugal Corner would have to carry all those tartans - or we would be broke in a week!

I believe that Ron is looking for tartans that have already been designed and registered for a cause, rather than looking for causes that deserve a tartan.

While they are not "Free Tibet" tartans, two were designed by the abbot of Samye Ling monastery in Eskadelmuir (not sure of the spelling of the last) near Dumfries in the Borders. It was the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery in western Europe or the Americas. The first is intended for lay Buddhists, and is made of the five colors of the Tibetan spectrum, yellow, red, blue, green and white. It's here: http://www.scottish-tartans-world-re...px?record=3165

I emailed the monastery about the two tartans some time ago when the news first came out, but heard nothing back from them.

BTW saffron IS a dark red when freshly dyed, the color of the Tibetan monks' robes. It usually soon fades to that mustard-like color that we usually think of when we think of saffron. Unless, I suppose, it was somehow fixed. Maybe that is what the Tibetan monks originally did....or rather, the monks from Nalanda Monastery in medieval India where the Tibet style of monks' robes first appeared.

While not strictly "cause" tartans, Rocky did design and register the Firefighters' and Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Tartans.

I have seen a tartan listed for Amnesty International on several lists of tartans.
