    Top 10 most common tartans

If you had to compile a list of the Top 10 of the most common tartans you're most likely to see (e.g. at a Burns night or a Highland games or something) what would they be?

I imagine: the Stewart tartans (Royal, Black, Hunting) would have to be high on the list, as would Black Watch....hmmm Anyone care to enlighten me with what they think? I'm just really curious.

MacKenzie, Irish National, and MacLeod of Harris seem to be very common, as well.

I would expect that Jerry's stock in trade would be very close to what is popular a a given time. That said:

    Black Watch
    Royal Stewart
    Black Stewart
    Macleod
    Mac Donald
    Wallace
    Gordon
    Irish National
    Pride of Scotland
    Mackenzie

Of course this is just a guess.

Royal Stewart, Black Watch, and Gordon Dress are probably the three most common tartans in the world.

I don't know just how valid this is as a way of determining the most "popular" tartans, but I would go to various vendor websites, and see which tartans are readily available in a wide variety of fabrics and weights. That would, to me anyway, seem a fair indicator. For instance, the various MacLean of Duart tartans are more readily available and in a wider range of fabrics and fibres than those of the "cousin" clan of MacLaine of Lochbuie.

But the question here isn't about availability or weights or variety of fabric... You're reading too far into the question if that's how you're looking at it. Let me rephrase it this way:

If you were to line up 100 kilted men, randomly selected from the next Highland Games, which tartans do you suppose would be most predominantly seen?

I guess that would depend WHERE those Games are held...
