    Unusual Tartans

I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago about getting lots of comments about my kilt in Heritage of Scotland tartan. At Bundanoon I had 4-5 people come up during the day and ask what it was, and heard comments from others that overheard but didn't ask the question.

Last weekend I went to the Celtic Festival at Glen Innes and got exactly the same response (mostly from other kilt wearers), At the Friday ceilidh and during the day at the festival, I had around 8 ask me, all stating they found it a very attractive Tartan. My Buchanan might be bright, but its never got this sort of attention(usually, is that a Buchanan, it was my dads or something along those lines). I think the blue base is the most unusual thing compared to most clan tartans that are green or red based. The purple makes it for me.

Best pic of the tartan i can find:

Has anyone had this sort of response with any other new or unusual tartan?

I'm sure I'll get sick of the attention and bite someones head off eventually. Three more events coming up for me, Aberdeen, Wingham and Port Arlington

I have that exact same kilt (from the infamous Gold Brothers). It was a gift from my beloved Flame-Haired celtic Amazon Goddess.

I received more positive comments about that kilt than the rest of my modest collection put together. The tartan is a very appealing one.

    Cheers

You may be on to something there, Al

I regularly get more comments when I wear my Blue Ramsay than I do with my other kilts.

In fact yesterday a woman came up to me, dressed in Blue Ramsay, in the supermarket and said "That's the Scottish tartan, isn't it?" Turns out she meant a tartan that represented the nation as a whole rather than a single clan or district. I think she thought that because my kilt was blue with quite a strong white stripe - the colours in the saltire cross flag - it must be a national tartan. (The kilt I was wearing is a PV one in which the colours are quite bright.)

When I think about it, it is probably because the colours are a wee bit bright and unusual that I do get those extra comments.

    I agree.

My partner has a that same kilt and gets more comments on it than any other. It is striking! I think it's the color plus the bold white line that makes it so.

And I wore my Ramsey (blue) a few times last week and it never failed to get noticed.

I found one variant for my own clan which I hadn't noticed before

Gordon Blue (at least thats what the tartan web store called it)...perhaps Matt can help with the actual authentication as Gordon Blue...

It would make a nice kilt me thinks

I have to say that the Royal Naval Association Tartan has garnered it's far share of compliments wherever I have worn it,

I would say it is an unusual tartan as it was just recently made available to the public, I am almost sure this is the first one in North America.

Glen, that is such a fantastic tartan. I really like the blue in the pleat reveal.

    Great looking tartans, fellows!

This one hasn't made very extensive rounds yet, but those who have seen it seem to think it's pretty unusual:

I'm patiently... lol... awaiting a kilt in the Burns Check tartan, from Matt Newsome. If THAT ONE isn't "unusual" I don't know what is. This picture was one Matt posted when I posed the question of pictures of the tartan in kilt form. After seeing this photo, I just HAD to have a kilt in this cloth. I'm pretty sure this one will garner it's share of questions.
