Viking Scot For Sure Now
So, my first cousin up in Bozeman did the DNA test thingie with Gene Tree and the Y DNA, which apparently goes from male to male, goes back to connection with Scandanavian ancestors.
Makes sense to me since our 5 great grandfather Ludovic Macdonald was from Uig, Skye - a Viking outpost where many relics have been found, and not too far from Uig, Lewis which was a center of Viking activity in the area.
I know there's been some knocking of these gene tracing companies but this reading seems to tie well with history. Guessing my Viking ancestors were already well integrated into the other bands that made up the population of Skye by the time tartans came along.
So, I'm a true Son of Somerled.

The Normans were of Scandinavian descent as well. They did get about a bit those Vikings!

that's very cool. it must be satisfying to have what would appear to be some scientific basis for what would otherwise be geneological speculation.
the flip side of the coin, though, is that a new door has been opened to you to ponder more deeply your scandanavian heritage. your imagination must be running wild...
congratulations.

Thanks Phil,
Part of my mother's side is strongly Norman - last name Brett. Guess that makes me a double Viking.

My Mom was 1/2 Irish (her Dad's side) and my Dad was Icelandic (of Danish decent--born in Iceland to a family with a 500 year history there). I figure that because the Vikings grabbed the Irish for slaves that makes me my own master and slave.

Ron, that's interesting. What is your brother's haplogroup?

Its my first cousin, not my brother. My father's brother's son.
The thingie mabob is Y-DNA Haplogroup: I-M170 Subgroup: I1-M253
Which, on their map shows Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland today. course the map is too small to show Skye.

Not quite. It is said that Vikings spread the genetic propensity for Dupuytren's Syndrome, a problem with the curling in of the fingers that progresses with age. I have it, as does my mother, who descends from the Gilmores (Morrison in English) of the Hebrides, who in turn are said to descend from Vikings.
