    Watson crest banner unveiled!

I'd like to show everyone the Watson crest banner we purchased from Highland Line International. www.Highlandline.com The owner Alan Wilson was very nice and helpful. He has 24 different family crests which are placed on flags, angled banners, or horizontal banners.

The first picture is of the banner on our trailer at the Grandfather Mt. Highland Games this year. Looked great and we got some nice compliments on it. Unfortunatly our trailer ended up being surrounded by so many others that the banner was pretty much hidden.

Click on the pictures to enlarge.

    Here is a closer view.

    Thanks Alan!

Very nice. I'm going to move this to the heraldry and tartans section, since we are discussing a heraldic banner of sorts.

Just for the record, the device is known as a "clansman's badge" or the "chief's crest badge", not a "family crest".

Isn't it simply a "clansman's badge" because the belt which goes around the "chief's crest badge"?

It's on Lyon's Court page but I just got up and haven't even had breakfast yet so I haven't doublechecked. Why did I look at Xmarks first?

That's a neat site. And, he's got Henderson available. *bookmarked*

I believe that's what I said. A "clansman's badge" or a "chief's crest badge", since the crest of the Chief is encircled in the buckle & strap.

This is what the Lyon Court's web site says:

It is correct for these people to wear their Chiefs Crest encircled with a strap and buckle bearing their Chief s Motto or Slogan. The strap and buckle is the sign of the clansman, and he demonstrates his membership of his Chiefs Clan by wearing his Chiefs Crest within it.
    Now we're just splitting hairs.

I'm just going by the picture. It has the belt around the Chief's Crest, that makes it a Clansman Crest.

So, I think we're saying the same thing.

Essentially...but I would argue that it is a badge, since the crest belongs to the chief as part of his arms. The chief's crest becomes a clansman's badge when the buckle & strap is added.

An armiger may wear his/her crest as a badge as well, but with a plain circlet -- no buckle & strap.

And, whenever the badge is displayed on stationary, literature, etc. the statement Cirean Ceann Cinnidh or "The Crest of the Clan Chief" is normally added.

    But again, I'm being picky.
