Burns Night Hawaii

Here are two descriptions of the event- The Caledonian Society of Hawaii and Maui Celtics

Mr. Robert Burns (of late) cordially invites you to a celebration of his birth!

“Burns: The Man and the Music.” Guest Jim Motherwell, former Queen’s Own Piper (arrives Jan 20, leaves Jan 27, sponsored by pipe band)

The Caledonian Society of Hawaii’s Annual Robert Burns Supper Saturday, January 23, 2010.

Jim Motherwell

B.E.M., Pipe Major at Eton, 10th Queen’s Piper
Pipe Major Motherwell, a native of Kilsyth, Scotland, learned the pipes from his father and Duncan Johnstone. He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders In 1980 and became Pipe Major in 1992.

Jim has toured the United States four times, two of them with Columbia Artists which included 42 states and 76 cities in a three month period. He has also played for President Bush (Senior) in the White House and President Bush (Junior), and President Clinton in Buckingham Palace. While Pipe Major to the Argyll’s, Jim travelled to the Vatican to play for the late John Paul 11.

Jim became Her Majesty The Queen’s Piper in 1998, a position from which he retired in 2003. He was the tenth piper to hold this position since 1843. His duties meant spending most of his year between Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Holyrood House, Balmoral Castle and Windsor Castle. Since leaving Royal Service Jim has played for many celebrities, including personally for Joan Collins at her wedding, Roger Moore, Michael Caine, Shirley Bassey, Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley. In the last year Jim has played concerts in Turkey, Norway, Las Vegas, Moscow, Mexico and New York. In the last five years Jim has been asked to play solo at The Proms at The Royal Albert Hall in London on three occasions.

January 23rd, 2010 - The Caledonian Society of Hawaii present Robert Burns: The Man and his Music at the Hawai'i Convention Center 5:30 to 9:00 pm. "Now is the time to put your guest list together for the 2010 Burns Supper celebration. Members can purchase a table of 10 for the member price of $700. Individual tickets are $70 for members, $80 for guests. Call Susan MacKinnon at 591-9398 for more information, or email susanmack@myhokua.com. You can also download a reservation form at www.scotsinhawaii.org. Robert Burns had a love of music, especially the folk music of his time. He collected hundreds of traditional songs and set many of his poems to Scottish fiddle tunes. The evening will be filled with many of these songs, some of which we will recognize and some will be new to us. Make your reservations now. We are also happy to have a guest piper, the Queen's 10th Piper from 1998-2003 Jim Motherwell, a fellow Scot from Kilsyth. He learned to play the pipes from Duncan Johnstone, a foremost composer and piping instructor from Glasgow."
