Southern OH Games?

What would it take to start up Highland Games in Southern Ohio (particularly Hamilton County)?

I figure:

Safety Smafty.

I would love if they added it to the local heritage festival here in Piqua, they have so many other odd things added to it already..

What would it take

You forgot probably the single most important thing. Lots and lots of volunteers! Most games that I know of that falter, do so because they underestimate the amount of work it takes to make a go of it.

...and a kick-ass celt rock band from, say, the mountains of North Carolina that might consider work cost effectally given that it's the first year. I dunno, just thinking....

Generally speaking it will take two years to organize everything, plus a minimum of $250k to cover the actual costs of a one day games. At that, expect to loose money or at best break even.

There are several city, county, and state parks in SW OH. Many would be great for games. I was disappointed when the Cincinnati Celtic Festival didn't return to Whitewater Park. I thought that was a great location for a festival.

Robert Reid, Celtic Cornerstore, might be a good person to approach about the idea. He has a good handle on the Scottish scene in Cincy, with the store and he is the band manager for Cincinnati Caledonians Pipes and Drums.

If you start working on it you might want to look at the weekends around Balmoral School of Piping and Drumming. It is held at Thomas More College. It brings in students from all over the country as well as top performers.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers!
Jake
