Pipe Bands in Germany

Hi everyone, I am a long time piper from Florida, and I am looking for a pipe band in Germany. My major in college is German, and I will be doing a study abroad there this summer. I will be in Mannheim, and I am looking for pipe bands close by. I will be staying in a dorm, and will lack transportation so somewhere close is a must. Does anyone know of any pipe bands around Mannheim? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Elijah,
There are the Clan Pipers in Frankfurt, that´s not so far from Mannheim. You could contact them on their homepage: www.clanpipers.de
Another pipe band I heard of is the Badelonian Pipe Band in Karlsruhe. Unfortunately they don´t seem to have a website.

Enjoy your stay in Germany.
Cheers
Thomas

I don't know any bands over in Germany, but I would point out that transportation over there isn't nearly as auto-centric as in the States. The Bahn might be a little pricey, but as a student you should be able to get discount tickets and you'll be able to look further afield.

Bagpipe Association of Germany

Check out this website.

There are probably 10 or 12 bands that I know of. The site also lists highland games and piping competitions that happen from May through September.

I plan on going to about 4 of them.

If you need further info, send me a private message.

Regards,

Tom

An old friend of mine from when I was stationed in Illeshiem runs a pipe band in Germany. It is a good 2 hour drive or so from Manhiem but you may want to check them out anyway. His name is Reinhard Hermann and he is an outstanding piper. Here is the pipe bands webpage.

I ended up finding the Heidelberg and District Pipes and Drums website, so I emailed them. They seem to be close by, and according to their website, my band uses their same chanter, so no borrowing is needed. Thanks to everyone for help and suggestions. Once I get a reply, I'll post the outcome.

I also noticed that there will be highland games the second weekend I am there, so that will be something I will have to check out.

I successfully made contact with the PM of the Heidelberg band, and I hope to atleast practice with them while I'm in Germany. I had no idea that the Highland games, and pipe band competitions were so large over in Germany, their band is almost larger than mine! I may even get to go tohighland games while I'm over there. Again thanks for the help.

Have fun while you're in Germany and good luck with the new pipe band. Germany has some first class pipers and I am sure you will represent us Yankee types well.
