Is your kilt being worn tight enough?
I like to wear a belt just so I have a break between kilt and well what ever's up top, the exception being a waistcoat. But you shouldn't need one to keep your kilt up especially if it's made for you.
I don't have a photo to hand to show but I don't wear one of those big waist plates either they always look a little tacky to me.

Seems to me the only reason it should be sliding down -- if properly made to measure AND properly fastened -- is if one's waist circumference is greater than the hips. Should that be the case, though, a belt wouldn't help to support the kilt, and that isn't its purpose anyway.

Re: How important is a belt?
Since we're on the subject of belts, and I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm very close to ordering my first kilt and was wondering from where you, who have 2-inch, non-plate, belts purchased them? All I seem to be able to find are the belts with shiny silver/brass/pewter plate buckles.
Thanks and sorry for the hijack.

I have two 2.25-inchers with the "hunter" buckle from Mojo Leather, one dark brown/brass and one black/silver:

I also have a 2.5" black one w/brass roller buckle from Oconee:

All 3 are excellent (I have two Mojo Leather sporran straps, too). Both makers go to the effort of smoothing the inner side and rounding/burnishing the edges to reduce wear on the wool.
EDIT: You can see me wearing the dark-brown Mojo Leather belt below. Clearly, my Mojo is working. . .

Choice between a belt and whisky? Sorry, I don't understand the question.

Re: How important is a belt?
Personally I always wear a belt with my casual outfit. I like the look, it's that simple. I never use the belt loops for it and have been critized several times for not doing so. I use the belt loops only for the sporran chain.
But as a belt is just an accessory I say "to each his own"

Re: How important is a belt?
i only wear a belt with my ghillie shirt for the gigs i play. the rest of the time i have a waistcoat on . the belt imo does come in handy but only realy to complete a stark rig or to give a visible break between shirt and kilt. just another word of advice if you are going to wear a belt make sure you have a day sporran as they like to scuff up cantles on the dress ones.

Re: How important is a belt?
When I am at home wearing my cheap 5yd casual, I don't wear a belt. If I am going out, wearing any kilt, I usually wear a waistcoat and jacket, so no belt. In the summer if going out with just a shirt, tucked in, I do wear a belt.
In other words, if out and about and the top of the kilt can be seen, then I wear a belt, otherwise no.
A daytime wedding would for me be a tweed jacket and waistcoat with tie with a leather day sporran, not semi or dress, no belt. Later for the reception where you may take your jacket and waistcoat off, take a belt along with you and slip it on. Only takes a few seconds.
I do use the belt loops because the belt is not holding up the kilt, it is just for show and I wear it fairly loose, so the loops stop the belt riding up when I sit down etc. I never use the belt loops for the sporran belt.
Chris.

Re: How important is a belt?
I personally dont care for a belt with a Charley and Argyll. For me it just fights the sporran too much. I like a clean look with clean lines. Though if one is needed then there is not much you can do. For a casual look with a tuck-in, or a polo belts are fine.
My kilt maven Prince Charley himself. His kit is alway top-draw. Between his tailor, himself, and few of the Royal women folk he is always in top kilt form.
My two cents,
Nylo
