I have just ripped the fabric for a new kilt, and noticed that the raw edge was deconstructing itself rather alarmingly.
I took the fabric to the sewing machine and selected the three step zig zag stitch.
It is like the standard zig zag at first glance, but it uses smaller stitches and makes three stitches one way and then three the other. I selected the widest setting and a fairly short stitch, then went right along the very edge of the fabric, so the needle actually missed the fabric on the outermost stitch. If I did not have that stitch I would have done two or three rows of zig zag, taking care to overlap the stitches
That seems to have stabilised the edge and is holding the warp and weft threads together, so hopefully when I put it together there will be no disasters.
I think I might put a couple of rows of straight stitching along the top edge of the completed kilt and maybe make the waistband a bit deeper than I had originally planned, just in case.
