    Barathea

Having seen various people's rather good work, I'm tempted to try and make my own jacket as I can't afford the rather extravagant prices I've seen on the supplier websites.

Any one know how much material I'd need to make an Argyl or Prince Charlie jacket?

Found a source of 14oz black at £22.50 a metre so thought I might get the old sewing box out. I know 16oz is normally used but trying to budget.

14oz barathea wool should be more than sufficient weight. That's the weight of my Argyle jacket and I wouldn't want it any heavier.

I know you'd want at least 2 meters double width (54" wide) for an average sized Argyle jacket (more for larger men). I would assume the same for a Prince Charlie.

I think you are a brave man, Martin.

By the time you have paid for the fabric, lining and interfacing and buttons, I think it would be cheaper to buy a completed garment.

Personally, I would go for an ex-rental. October and November are traditionally the months when the vendors hold their sales. I know Anderson's of Dumfries have their rental clearance in November.

    Good Luck.
