First kilt, what fabric?

Best material I've ever used for making a contemporary kilt...hands down. LOVE this stuff. If I ever make another X-kilt, I'm spending the money for this stuff, in "charcoal"
$20/yard. SO worth it.

The Hempcel blend is probably worth trying, too. But for your first one, just use the cotton-poly blend from JoAnnes.

My two cents: If you can afford it, nothing beats working with wool. 13oz will keep you cool in the summer, too. 4 yards of 13oz will run you $200+ or so depending on the tartan and the mill.

If funds are an issue, polyviscose will make an acceptable lightweight kilt for much less. Just don't forget to hem it!

I don't know the best way but I started making my first kilt with wool blanket material. I have not made a sewing machine made kilt yet (but I'm considering it) and hand sew all the kilts I make. It's cheap if you can get some material off of gently used websites or the bay. I also have since recycled my first kilt and reused the belts and buckles on another kilt. It turned out ok, but I made a lot of mistakes and didn't realize it until a couple of kilts later. It took a while to learn the best hand position for the pleats too.
