    Kilt Pins

I am looking for a place that can either make a custom kilt pin, or for some ideas of a unique DIY kilt pin. Does anyone have any helpful ideas for a project or do you know of a good site that you have used in the past.

    Thanks
I don't always wear a kilt, but when I do, I've made it myself.

If you've got ideas and a few bucks to spend, Quantum Silver (http://www.quantummfg.com/) can probably help you out.

Do a search on XMarks. There is one thread that must have a hundred of our pins on it, some made by members, some heritage pieces.

I have made a couple of pins using a standard blanket pin and some of my old uniform buttons

I just snip off the top of the button shank, feed it through the hole at one end of the blanket pin and whack on epoxy glue. Let the glue set a bit then, adjust button to final position I want and let it set overnight. Cost, less than a dollar for the blanket pin, buttons, nil and glue, I always have some in the garage.

Good DIY advice, Mike. A slice of antler or bone, a bit of polished stone, a silver coin, nearly anything you can think of. Bob's yer uncle.

I have some nice stones if you are interested. I had a thread a while back and the consensus among the rabble was that they would make nice pins. To be honest, though, I rarely wear a kilt pin.

Once when I was in one of the many craft stores in the Maryland/Pennsylvania are here in the states, I found a package of stick pin backs. Stick pins with out a stone, jewel, art design on it. They also have an end that covers the point of the pin. These could be used to similar to the blanket style kilt pin.

What are you interested in? "Clan art?" Abstract stuff? Funny? Vintage look? I keep an eye on thrift stores and the Sally Ann looking for old brooches and pins that can be used for such. If you're wanting a clan crest or somewhat, then you might be dollars ahead to buy one ready-made. Abstracts -- lightning bolts, Hammer of Thor, spirals, caduceus, or whatever shape you desire -- you can often cut out of complementary metals yourself. Copper and brass look good together, stainless is a b*tch to work with hand tools but can look good, other metals as you desire (but I tend not to work in the expensive ones!).

I've seen some really cool anodizing on titanium, and many jewelry artists can do the process. You may find someone to work with if you hit the craft fairs and outdoor markets that should be blossoming soon.

Mostly for me it's keeping my mind "primed" with the basic question, "Could I make a kilt pin out of that?" You'll be surprised at the variety you find.
