Dram, take a forever-length of butcher's twine, thread it though the lace holes of a shoe, put the shoe on, roughly divide the length in two and tighten to comfort on your foot.
Take each lace in hand, stretch up to your knee and braid one, two, three (three turns one around the other) keeping outward tension so that the laces make a twist at the front of your ankle.
Change hands so that the lace in your right hand goes to your left. Reach to the back of your leg with both hands and change again. At about your mid-shin tie a standard bow. As snug as you would a shoe lace.
If you do this properly the combination of twist in front and switch behind will keep the laces in place and not make you look like a gladiator with socks.
When the knot is tied let the ends of the string hang down your leg an inch or so and then cut the string. Undo the whole thing and you will be able to take a fairly accurate measurement.
