Madmacs, I've worked a regimental tam over using the method Jock uses, and it works just fine. I wear one regularly in the fall and winter, and it looks infinitely better after dunking, shaping, and drying than when it was brand new.

I assume you have a regimental tam, one of the newer ones that has a smaller diameter than the older one. (I have an older one, too, that I treated in similar fashion.)

Yep... Got a bargain on ebay... Came with unexpected freebies of a glengarry, caubeen, balmoral and hackles too...

For what I have in it $$ wise I guess i'll try the dunking...

Just follow Jocks lead mate but please resist the urge to pull it down too much on the back of your head The tam should just rest on crown

Just like the PTI on the Colonels left

Well I gave in an overnight dunking christmas eve, and it froze in the bucket of water... Doesn't seem to have done any damage though...

I'm fairly happy with the shaping and the little bit of shrinkage... It's with a smaller badge and tartan backing than normal, but I think it looks good.

Not bad for a $5 ebay find... And it had the bonus of coming with a caubeen, a glengarry, and a balmoral (passed on to a guy at work that apparently misplaced his somewhere)

The vendor was alltartan in ontario and the hats are pretty decent, the glengarry has hessian stiffening rather than card, the tam has silk lining... They dont seem to have fully embraced ebay, but I'd say they're worth checking out. Customer service wasnt as good as Rocky, but it certainly wasnt anything to complain about either...

You just can't beat Robert Mackie bonnets. However, I'm unsure if they make tams-I wasn't aware that tams were still worn today, well, besides MOD standard issue. I suppose a proper 'Jocking' would be the best way to shape a tam.
