I agree with the last couple of posts, I think this is an issue with a defective or bad snap. I have four cheep sporrans, three of which have very stiff flaps that pull up, but the snapps hold well.

Go with the magnetic snap, they are very good.

I suddenly have the urge to reread Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. Strange feeling...

I'm looking at a snap that is the same size and make as the ones used on the sporrans; I forget what the number for them is.

There seems to be parts inside of the back side of the front piece of the snap that clamp around the bottom part of the snap. It's possibly a springy wire

My guess is that piece is defective.

Wasn't generalizing. Just trying to be sure it was in fact leather. would hate to tell another member of the rabble to soften his sporran to have it desolve because it wasn't actual leather. Was more of a caution. I don't assume the sporrans leather is junk but its never a bad idea to double check somethings before moving ahead.

Here's an idea, too-make a small "loop" forward of the sporran body, and mount the snap to it-you put finger in loop to brace, and snap flap down. Snap sets and anvils are fairly available at craft stores. Filson up in Seattle does it with a lot of their jackets this way.
