Tourie replacement

Does anyone know where I might find a replacement tourie for my Balmoral? I don't mind sewing it on myself.

How about making it yourself? Get some yarn in the color of your choice and go to town! The technique is pretty easy- Wind it around your hand 50-70 times, tie it tightly about the middle with another piece of yarn (leaving long tails to attach it with), snip the dozens of loops thus created, and trim into the fuzz-ball shape of your choice.

You can also find some very good instructions in the bakc of So You're Going to Wear the Kilt with a picture of a card you can use to wind it around. Tying it with a good heavy uphostery thread might make the attachment easier.

The toorie does not have to be all one color. If you wear the Balmoral with a tartan kilt, why not pick two or three colors int he tartan and wind them together as outlined above? If you have a khaki-colored or camo kilt, you could find some yarns that complement or contrast with it and make one form those colors. Black, tan and green would make a good toorie to wear with a camo kilt, for example. (If it's jungle camo, that is!

I googled making pompoms and got instructions. Two donut shaped pieces of cardboard. Hold them face to face. Wind the yarn through the hole all around. I find 12 to 24 feet is good depending how dense you want the toorie. Hold the hole tightly between two fingers, cut around half way and slip a piece of the same yarn behind it. Finish cutting and pull to bunch it all together with a knot. You now have two puffs sticking out of a donut. Pull the cardboard off either side. Fluff it up and trim any long bits. Use the yarn you tied it with to sew it on.

You can also use a ruler. Wind the yarn around it many, many times. Slip a yarn between the wound yarn and the ruler and tie it securely. Then cut the yarn on the opposite side of the ruler, and trim it round.
