Weaving advice

Hello all in the ranks of the DIYer's I have not yet woven my own tartan.

I got a new loom today, an old sturdy floor loom with a 45" weaving width.

Seems just the thing to get me interested in weaving wool again.

So I am asking for those of you who weave if you have a favorite yarn supplier and if you could help me pick something out that would give me a nice 16 oz cloth. I currently have a 12 dpi reed and since most of the 16 oz cloth I have worked with is woven at around 35 yarns per inch I am thinking 36 isn't much of a stretch.

Let me know what your thoughts are as well as any words of wisdom to the beginner (I do plan on weaving a scarf before warping up 10 yards of tartan btw...)

I wove in a commercial mill years ago but I don't remember much about it and did not know the technicalities then. Just keep her running, let the fixer know when the warp needed swapping out. Tying little knots all night on eight looms.

Oh BTW the tartan I intend to weave is one of my own design.

I haven't named it really it's just blue/red design #3 at the moment but I may attach my own surname to it as there is not a tartan associated with my dad's side of the family.

Gabe, I really like the green you incorporated into the sett.

I can't offer suggestions on where to get yarn n the US but suggest you want to use a 2/16 Crossbred worsted for a good 16oz cloth.

Commercial cloth is set/finished at 40 epi but you'll get away with hand woven cloth at 36 epi. A 12 dent reed is a little awkward as 3 ends per split doesn't natually work with a 4 shaft set up so you might want to consider getting hold of a 9 dent reed.

I am finding it difficult to obtain 2/16 yarn but 2/20 is easier to find.

Would that weave up nicer at 48 dpi with 4 ends per dent?
