I agree with Peter, the kilt definitely seems to be hemmed. And I take back what I said about having an outfit near identical to that in our museum collection. I didn't realize the outfit in the photo was made from a houndstooth/shepherd's check cloth. The one we have is solid grey/brown, with the selvage stripe in a darker brown.

It was pretty common in those days (1880s) for American children (at least the children of people with money and time on their hands) to be photographed, and go out in various types of interesting outfits, Highland, sailor, velvet Fauntleroy suits, even cowboys and indians. Most of FDR's boyhood photographs seem to show him in sailor suits. Until he was 3 or 4 he wore what would seen today to be dresses, a custom of the day for boys from affluent families.

    Hi Peter,

I had meant to post an enlarged close-up of the jacket for you, I got sidetracked earlier (something about Irish kilts, woodcuts, etc)

Thanks "Z".....I knew about the rich dressing up their children in various fashions, I guess maybe I was overthinking this one

I do find it interesting though that they would go to the trouble of having a "clan badge" made up based on the family crest, just for a childs outfit, but then if you have money to burn....

Here's a well-written article on FDR's arms by a fellow clansman, Joseph McMillan:
