I've neglected to study up on the Royale Ecossois uniform of the '45, but here's a pic of a U.K. reenactor who I assume has done his homework - or at least his unit has! They wear the cocked hat, but his coat looks shorter than the full-length justaucorps:

If I remember correctly, Alan Breck was serving in Drummond's Regiment in Kidnapped.

There is a photo of some reenactors on the Scotwars page about the Royal Ecossais; note the gent in the center wearing the French uniform with the "guid blue bonnet":

Too true Sir,
the 'Blae Bunnet' was worn by the troops before the tricorn came in. The Royal Ecossais, Ogilvie's and Albany's were the Franco-Scottish Regiments (not to mention the Jock Jacobites that served in the Irish Regiment's, i.e Dillion's, Routh's, Lally's etc.)

NB: Culloden/Drumossie Moor 1746 had the Royal Scots of England facing the Royal Scots of France across the field. Ironic huh? Neither side really fighting for themselves (except maybe the French troops).
