    shirt

I'm not sure where this one goes but I was wondering what kind of shirt would be historically appropriate for wearing with a Matt Newsome box pleated kilt?

Historically I would say the pull over three button long shirt that was common wear for so many centuries.. Much like a linen Grandfather shirt, or muslin.... I have found these shirts in the civil war sutlers sites, you can get them with collars or not. With my research in other subjects, they changed very little in the 1700's to 1800's.

Oou! That's a good question. I saw a lot of discussion of how the early Victorian shirt collars and the era before that were different from modern collars. Also, that it depended on the neckwear involved, if I understand correctly.

    Look forward to the answers.

Do you have any links to dealers?

    Townsend & Son has the 19th C. placket-front shirt:

...as well as an 18th C. version:

More decent shirts here, including a dressier pleated version, plus cravats!

    J. Peterman shirts are on sale for $18 right now (reg. $39). I think they have an 18th c. look to them without looking too much like reenactment garb. I also think they'd look really nice with one of Matt's box pleated kilts.

Do we have proof to point to for the thread that those are the style or close to the style that were actually worn with the box pleated kilts? I guess a painting would work.

Matt's tailored box-pleated kilts are an early-to-mid 19th C. style. Those Peterman shirts are great for that look (they're not really 18th C. as described, what with the placket fronts and multiple buttons), as are the 19th C. shirts from Townsend and Blockade Runner....

The 18c. had just the black or white cravat for the more, um, common man, with the stand up collar, didn't it?

I remember wearing just the black band around my neck as neck wear, with the three button shirt, with the collar that just had the little wings that stuck out over the cravat?

I would really love to do the look, but all I can see is the dollar signs running rampant in my head?
